Abstract

The Danwei system was the basic social-spatial unit in cities of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). However, two reforms of the PRC fundamentally changed such system. This study analyzed changes in social structure in AMS Danwei of Hefei old city from the aspects of compound management entities, and social relations between individuals and organizations within the compound. The study found that the social structure has changed from a tree structure into a diverse and fragmented one where close-knit social groups have declined and become individualized. The study recommends public oriented facilities and community organizations to revitalize sociality in Danwei.
