Abstract
Objective To investigate the changes of serum homocysteine (Hcy) levels in patients with cerebrovascular disease and its effect on carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT).Methods Eighty patients (control group) who had done healthy physical examination in our hospital, and 160 patients with cerebrovascular disease (study group) were choosed, the study group was subdivided into cerebral infarction group (80 cases) and TIA group (80 cases). The serum homocysteine and carotid artery intima-media thickness were detected and compared with each other. Results Hcy and IMT in the study group compared with the control group, the differences were statistically significant ( P <0.05) ; between the cerebral infarction group and TIA group, there was no significant difference ( P >0.05).Between serum Hcy and IMT in patients with cerebrovascular disease, there was a positive correlation. Conclusions The high levels of serum homocysteine in patients with cerebrovascular disease can increase the common carotid artery intima-media thickness and the incidence of cerebrovascular disease. Key words: Homocysteine; Cerebrovascular disease; Intima-media thickness
