Abstract
By FTIR spectroscopy in undoped and Fe-doped LiNbO 3 single crystals of same origin and different histories it was found that laser irradiations in Fe-doped crystals cause the appearance of an OH − band at ∼3507 cm −1. This band is assumed to be caused by the formation of Fe 2+(Li)–OH −–Fe 3+(Nb) complexes via proton migration. This process precedes the microscopic structural laser-damages studied earlier.
