Abstract

In rabbits under light ether anesthesia cortically evoked rhythmic movements of chewing and swallowing or reflex swallowing by superior laryngeal nerve stimulation are inhibited when in addition the lingual nerve is stimulated. 1. During the inhibition, discharge in some hypoglossal nerve fiber was inhibited, while enhanced in others. 2. Facilitation or inhibition was produced in the gross potential of the hypoglossal nerve, depending on the interval between paired stimuli, the one to the cortex and the other to the lingual nerve. 3. Motoparalysis induced by gallamine triethiodide did not alter the response of the hypoglossal units. 4. Behavior of hypoglossal units during the inhibition was discussed in relation to the neural mechanisms of chewing and swallowing.
