Abstract

The question of the structure of free time interests many of our readers. Thus far this question has been but little studied. Free time is often identified with all the time not spent working, with non-working time. This is incorrect. Strictly speaking, free time is only a part of non-working time. It includes the time spent upon study, upon increasing skills, upon civic activity, the upbringing of children, artistic creative activity, the satisfaction of other cultural needs (reading, watching TV, attending movies and concerts, etc.), time spent in physical culture and sports, and other forms of leisure and active recreation. Free time in a strict sense constitutes at most 20% of non-working time, as shown in studies of time budgets of working people.
