Abstract

Background: Despite updates to practice guidelines regarding monitoring and treatment of hyperbilirubinemia acute bilirubin encephalopathy (ABE) and its consequence, kernicterus spectrum disorder, continues to occur. Total bilirubin (TB) is the standard measure of bilirubin despite free bilirubin (Bf) being the neurotoxic portion.
