Abstract

Ratings of self and others on selected personality traits were collected from two samples of college men and women across a ten year period from 1971 to 1981 in order to determine what changes in self-perceptions and perceptions of others had occurred. Women increased in self-ratings and other ratings on traits of ambitious, astute in practical matters, socially outgoing, likable, and uninhibited. Men declined in self-ratings of honest, likable, socially outgoing, and reliable, and increased on traits of ambitious, astute in practical matters, and energetic. The differences between the sexes over the ten year period were discussed in light of social, cultural changes.
