Abstract

Long-term testing of silicate and borate optical glasses is performed in a humid environment. Products of water reacting with glass components are shown to form on the borate glass surface, causing an increase in the roughness parameter Rz. Pretreatment in hexamethyldisiloxane vapors reliably protects glasses from aggressive moisture. Silicate optical glasses are more resistant to humidity and do not require pretreatment. Roughness parameter Rz is found to be an inadequate metric of the roughness of the surface with a protective coating, owing to the limitations of its determination. Topographic measurements are more reliable in this instance.
