Abstract

The acidophilic Stilling cells of the interrenal bodies of Rana pipiens respond to hypophysectomy (10 days) and exposure to 150 m M NaCl (7 days) by a decrease in cytoplasmic volume, and in the ratio of cell diameter to nuclear diameter. Interrenal cells decrease in volume in response to either treatment, bu the nucleus shrinks as well after exposure to 150 m M NaCl. Kidney cells show no change in cell diameter. The results suggest a functional significance for the Stilling cells in relation to salt and water balance.
