Abstract

SummaryGamma irradiation was used to test the possibility of prolonging the storage life of Spadona pears. The fruit was irradiated with doses of 0, 50, 100, 200, 300, and 400 krads and stored at -1° C. for up to six months. No prolongation of storage or shelf-life was obtained. Doses above 100 krads were found to be harmful to the external appearance of the fruit and to the flavour, texture and internal condition of its pulp. The extent of damage was proportionate to the dose.
