Abstract

That chronic treatment with hypophyseal extracts may cause morphological changes in the anterior lobe of the pituitary was first observed by Bell (1) in the guinea pig, in which the chromophil granules disappear under the influence of such treatment. But even before that Berblinger (2) found an increase in the weight of the hypophysis of rabbits treated with gonadotropic extracts of placental origin. He observed that such treatment causes the development of ‘pregnancy cells,’ a finding which has subsequently been confirmed in various species by numerous investigators (3 to 9). Collip, et al (10) and Thomson, et al (11) noted in the course of their experiments with thyrotropic anterior lobe extracts that, under the influence of chronic treatment with such preparations, the ovaries of rats involute, corpusluteum formation ceases, and at the same time castration cells and cysts form in the anterior lobe of the hypophysis. Fluhmann (12) confirmed these findings, using a sheep anterior lobe extract, which led ...
