Abstract

The downshore distribution of an intertidal population of Macoma balthica (L.) in the Wash was studied between May 1972 and June 1975. Although the whole population was distributed in a wide zone between high water neaps and just below mid shore level there were differences between the distributions of the large and small animals. These differences were the result of a downshore change in the distribution of M. balthica with increase in size and were correlated with the distribution of the two main substratum particle sizes (63–125 μm; 125–350 μm).
