Abstract

In the interval between successive spawnings, female three-spined sticklebacks showed an initial decline in their tendency to show courtship behaviour in response to a courting male, as the time of next spawning approached this tendency recovered. The head-up and slight following response persisted longest and was the first to reappear. The behavioural changes were due primarily to changes intrinsic to the female rather than changes in the males' courtship behaviour.
