Abstract

Quantitative changes in the free amino acids, sugars and adenine nucleotides in the hardwood stems of mulberry plants (Morus alba L.) were followed during bud opening. Following this, the starch and ATP content decreased rapidly. The value of the adenylate energy charge, ATP+½; ADP/ATP + ADP+AMP, or ATP/ADP ratio became lower. Asparagine, proline and arginine existed prominently at the onset of budding. After budding, the content of proline and asparagine decreased consecutively, but that of arginine increased initially and then decreased. Thus, the fluctuations in the carbohydrate and amino acids metabolism in the hardwood stems caused by budding was characterized by a rapid decrease in energy and carbohydrates reserves, and a concurrent decrease in proline and asparagine. The conversion of asparagine to arginine is also presumed to have taken place at the same time.
