Abstract

In 5 patients with sigmoid loop urinary diversions, the sodium, potassium, and urea concentrations in the urine from the ureters and from the sigmoid loop were compared. Sodium and potassium were treated rather indifferently by the sigmoid segment as there was little or no significant difference between concentrations in the ureteral and the sigmoid loop urines. Three patients had a decreased urea concentration in the sigmoid loop urine, suggesting a transportation into the blood from the urine. In comparison with a corresponding study on ileal loop urinary diversion, the sigmoid loop showed little tendency towards changes in the urinary composition. Therefore, sigmoid loop urinary diversion is recommended for patients with an impaired kidney function.
