Abstract

SUMMARYLow molecular weight sugars and sugar alcohols, fructans of varying molecular weight and neutral sugars derived by acid hydrolysis from healthy leaves of Tussilago farfara and leaves infected by pyenial and aecial stages of Puccinia po arum have been identified and quantitatively analysed. At sites of infection, there are progressive increases in amounts of the fungal components, mannitol, arabitol and a mannose containing polymer, and of host fructans. Results are compared and contrasted with other host‐parasite combinations.
