Australian Journal of Public AdministrationVolume 52, Issue 4 p. 443-456 CHANGES IN THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH DEPARTMENTAL MACHINERY OF GOVERNMENT: 1928 - 1982. Beverley Castleman, Beverley Castleman *Former doctoral student at Deakin University, Geelong. This article reports some of the outcomes of a research program more fully reported in the author's thesis for which she was recently awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. She wishes to thank particularly Professor Don Aitkin for the original suggestion of this topic as, the subject for her research; Dr. Peter Wilenski for his assistance in obtaining for her unsurpassed special access to papers of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C), the Attorney-General's Department (AG's) and the Public Service Board (PSB); John Nethercote for advice and assistance in relation to the research and to special access; and officers of PM&C, AG ‘s, PSB and the subsequent Public Service Commission whose help greatly enriched the database.
