Abstract

The Heihe River Basin is a globally significant carbonpool, but its soil organic carbon dynamics is poorly understood. Soilsamples taken between 2500 m and 4100 m revealed that the majority(>75%) of soil organic carbon was from 0-40 cm. It showed anegative relationship with pH and soil bulk density, and a positiverelationship with altitude and soil water content, respectively. From2005 to 2011, soil carbon content in the upper catchment decreasedfrom 93 g/kg to 53 g/kg. These results suggest that policies shouldaim to reduce carbon loss by transferring it from the top- to thesub-soil.
