Abstract

Previous studies have provided evidence that insulin can induce important modifications in plasma and erythrocyte magnesium levels (1), and that insulin-resistance could modify the ionophoric action exerted by insulin on erythrocytes (2). No data are reported in literature as regards the modifications of platelet magnesium concentrations during oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the behavior of plasma, erythrocyte and platelet magnesium concentrations, measured by direct current spectrometry, in normotensive and hypertensive obeses, and in a group of age- and sex-matched healthy subjects, during OGTT. Plasma glucose, insulin and norepinephrine were also evaluated.
