Abstract
Textural and structural changes induced in α-spodumene (Li 2Al 2Si 4O 12) by impact and friction milling are studied using XRD, IR spectroscopy, DTA, SEM and cation exchange capacity determinations. The mechanochemical treatment produces a diminution of particle size together with an increase of BET surface area, and a change in the crystal shape. Moreover a progressive distortion of the crystalline network affected the spectroscopic properties of the material, and enhanced its chemical reactivity to acid dissolution. Changes in its phase transformation sequence under thermal treatment are also observed. The phase γ-spodumene, which is not observed in the sequence α→β, appears at 800°C when mechanically treated α-spodumene is used as a starting material.
