Abstract
AbstractA survey of 48 Chinese mothers and their babies was made regarding intravenous infusion of fluid and oxytocin during labour and changes in neonatal transcutaneous bilirubinometer (TCB) index. No significant difference was found in cord plasma bilirubin levels at delivery or TCB readings in the first 3 days of life between infants whose mothers had no intravenous infusion and infants whose mothers had infusion of Hartmann's solution or 5% dextrose solution with oxytocin. Administration of intravenous fluid or oxytocin in routine management of labour would not lead to neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia nor contribute to the high incidence of neonatal jaundice in full‐term Chinese newborn infants.
