Abstract

Summary Guinea-pigs sensitized to powdered egg albumen by inhalation developed respiratory embarrassment during periods of subsequent re-exposure. At necropsy, maximum pulmonary distension was observed within half an hour of the onset of respiratory symptoms and peribronchial eosinophilia was maximal at 4 hours. Varying degrees of pulmonary distension and peribronchial eosinophilia were still present at 24 hours. Mononuclear infiltration of the pulmonary parenchyma was also observed. The results suggest that several immunological mechanisms of tissue injury are involved.
