Abstract

This paper presents findings from interviews with 78 grandmothers whose son or daughter experienced a divorce. Grandmothers were questioned regarding the effects of divorce on their relationships with their divorced child, their former in-law, and their grandchildren. Respondents' feelings about their child's divorce were also explored. Overall, mothers appeared to provide support to their divorced child and relatively few felt the divorce had a negative impact on their own lives. Implications of legally protecting the grandparent-grandchild relationship are examined.
