Abstract

Water-ion coupling as measured by electroosmotic efficiency across the plasma membrane of Nitella translucens, was found to increase when the turgor pressure of the cells was reduced by adding 0.1 M or more mannitol or sucrose to the water outside the cells. It is thought that reduction in turgor causes an increase in thickness of the membrane, and that this increased thickness is associated with the increase in ion-water coupling.
