Abstract

The transition to the new content of education in the elementary school has been prepared by fundamental psychological and pedagogical research that demonstrates the possibility of essentially changing the nature of the entire elementary education process. The findings of scholarly teams headed by L. V. Zankov, A. A. Liublinskaia, M. A. Mel'nikov, N. A. Menchin-skaia, D. B. El'konin, S. M. Iazykov, and other scholars are of fundamental importance. Colleagues of the USSR Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, in collaboration with personnel of other scholarly pedagogical institutions, have worked out both the theoretical principles and the curricular content for the reorganization of elementary instruction throughout the country. As a result of their research, the feasibility of a three-year period of elementary education was demonstrated and new syllabuses for grades 1-3 were compiled after many years of experimental verification.
