Abstract

Preoperative cardiac assessment is critical in patients scheduled for non cardiac major surgery and/or at risk of cardiovascular perioperative complications. The first line evaluation relies on questioning the patient and performing ECG and transthoracic echocardiography examination. Cardiac stress tests (6MWD, ECG or echocardiography) provide further information about functional tolerance and their results are associated with the occurrence of perioperative complications. MNR is the gold standard for measurement of the systolic function of the left ventricle. It also allows a good assessment of diastolic function. In addition, MNR provides informations on the quality of the myocardial tisssue that can be ischemic or fibrotic, and estimates its viability. In the near future, Echocardiography and MNR will benefit from the support of artificial intelligence. Eventually, up to know, the cost of the examination and its availability made MNR less used than echocardiography for preoperative cardiac function evaluation.
