Mark has watched Traffic grow from the time it was just a concept and helped shepherd the journal through its fragile early years in the face of great change in the publishing world. To put this into perspective, when Traffic launched in 1999, submissions to the journal required four hard copies, and online journals were still something of a novelty. In 1999, Bill Clinton was President of the United States, the Euro currency was first introduced, the Back Street Boys were in the top 10 and Star Wars Episode I was released to theaters. Taken from the editorial published in the inaugural issue 1: Traffic was conceived by [Frances Brodsky, Mark Marsh and Sandra Schmid], together with the late Thomas Kreis, to provide a journal operated by active scientists that will reflect the continuing excitement and rapid advances in the field. Traffic will fulfill the growing need for a central journal to gather together publications that are of most interest to those working on intracellular trafficking. Mark, together with his fellow co-Editors (Frances Brodsky, Sandra Schmid, Trina Schroer, Tom Stevens, Gillian Griffiths, Gerrit van Meer and Mickey Marks) has worked to see this goal come to fruition. We are grateful that Mark will remain “in the family” as an Associate Editor. There is no way we can sufficiently thank Mark for his insight, guidance and friendship over the years. We are pleased to announce the appointment of Sharon Tooze as the newest co-editor of Traffic. Reference 1Brodsky FM, Marsh M, Schmid SL. Green light for traffic. Traffic 2000; 1: 1– 2.
