Abstract

Changes in genomic nucleic acid content and salt induced alteration in polypeptide pattern were studied in two resistant (C 92038 & Co 85004) and two susceptible (Co 85036 & Si 94050) sugarcane genotypes under salt stress (7 EC). Result of the study revealed that changes in RNA and DNA content under salinity stress might be responsible for specific expression of salt shock proteins (SSP) with MW of 15 kDa, 28 kDa and 72 kDa in tolerant genotypes, while there were completely absent in susceptible. However, supplementing GA3 under salt stress condition enhanced nucleic acid content (RNA) and thus induced expression of SSP in susceptible genotypes with low intensity.
