Abstract
This chapter discusses the foundation of community colleges (also known as junior colleges), the role of community colleges, and innovative practices emanating from community colleges. Since their inception, community colleges have been the cornerstone of higher education, serving the local community by providing the identified skills training and career development identified as enhancing the community and the industry of the geographical region they serve. In the 21st century, community colleges have experienced heightened pressure to meet national education objectives, increased technology, budgeting demands, increased accountability measures for leaders, diversity of students and faculty, and reduced funding. Despite these challenges, community colleges continue to offer education at a lower annual cost than traditional four-year institutions, making them more affordable for all students.
