Abstract

The infectious Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has caused havoc worldwide and is posing one of the biggest challenges that the global healthcare systems has ever seen before. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported the first case of the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, Hubei Province of China in December 20191. Given the alarming spread and severity of the cases, it later declared COVID outbreak as a global pandemic on March 11, 20201. As of 26 April 2020, WHO has reported more than 2.88 million cases in more than 213 countries and territories, resulting in more than 198,000 deaths2. In India, as of 27 April 2020 (5:00 PM), the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW). has reported 28380 COVID-19 cases, (including 111 foreign nationals) in 32 states/union territories and 886 deaths3. The outbreak has affected very walk of life and people of all ages. However, older people (people over the age of 60) and those with underlying medical conditions are high-risk groups4. fatality rate has been According to a recent publication, the fatality rate of those over the age of 60 is 4.5% globally as compared to 1.4% for people under 60. The fatality rate is disproportionately higher for people over the age of 80 at a whopping 13.4%5. Given the statistics, the need to provide adequate attention and care to this vulnerable section goes unsaid.
