Abstract

In 2009, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) released new internal medicine program requirements.1 Although there were 15 new requirements, 2 areas of focus were the role of core faculty and training in the ambulatory setting. The previous term “key clinical faculty” became “core faculty,” with a defined number of designated faculty based on the size of the program and new roles associated with the competency assessment. The new requirements for ambulatory training affected the resident continuity clinic, included changes in panel management and the number of clinics, and limited the amount of time emergency medicine could count toward the required one third of training of ambulatory time.
