Abstract

The Paper reports on the challenges on the exposition of Traffic signs and symbols to Lagos State roads users. The result has proven that there is low exposition of traffic signs and symbols to road users most especially the Drivers in Lagos State, Nigeria. The overall average percentage of road users who correctly interprets the regulatory signs was 59%, cautionary signs were 64.2%, and a pavement marking was 31.8%. The average knowledge percentage of road user (driver) for driving under special condition, speed/mechanical factor and general guides are 43%, 53.66% and 46.4% respectively. The statistical cross analysis significance conducted in the study proved that age, driving experience and educational background play a major role in drivers understanding of traffic signs and symbols. The study recommends adequate training and sensitization of our drivers on the meaning of traffic signs and symbols and the importance of compliance by the road users .The body concerned for issuing driver’s license should carefully test the drivers’ knowledge before issuing driver’s license and also traffic law court should be established for prosecution of defaulters.
