Abstract

This chapter briefly reviews the literature on the most commonly used automated essay evaluation (AEE) systems in North America: Educational Testing Services (ETS)'s e-rater, Pearson's Intelligent Essay Assessor (IEA), Vantage Learning's IntelliMetric. It examines education, Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)/Writing in the Disciplines (WID), composition studies, and technical communication research that points toward the increasing use of multimodal forms of writing in settings that range from kindergarten through college. The chapter also sketches out possibilities for using limited forms of AEE and other software agents for feedback on students' multimodal compositions. While AEE systems provide primarily text-based evaluations and responses, these may be coupled with feedback from teachers, peers, and other readers to help students revise their multimodal compositions. The chapter highlights the ways in which software that assesses and provides feedback can be included as part of a system of responding to students' multimodal writing. Keywords:automated essay evaluation (AEE) systems; composition studies; educational testing services (ETS)'s e-rater; IntelliMetric; multimodal writing; pearson's intelligent essay assessor (IEA); technical communication research; writing across the curriculum (WAC); writing in the disciplines (WID)
