Abstract

The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) presents many important challenges that require the development and use of Cyber-Physical System (CPS) methodologies. These methods have the potential to increase NextGen system efficiency (reduce delays), robustness (reduce impact of weather disruptions) and energy efficiency (reduce fuel burn), and decrease environmental impact, while ensuring safety. It is also important to recognize that many of the problems identified are prevalent in many other infrastructure Cyber-Physical Systems, such as energy systems, power systems, and ground transportation systems. Similarly, lessons on certification processes many be shared with medical device developers. Ultimately, research into fundamental CPS challenges has the potential to transform the manner in which NextGen systems will evolve and operate.
