Abstract

Water-related challenges involve aspects of scientific hydrology and water resources management. We studied research projects funded by the State of Chile through different institutional funds in the last 20 years to identify scientific challenges for hydrology in Chile, which are mainly related to the understanding of the water cycle and infrastructure design. Then, the recent evolution of the challenges in hydrology and water resources are analyzed, as they have been faced by several research, innovation, and development centers recently created. We also present the challenges in water resources management identified by many of these research centers and institutions, which deal mainly with eco- and socio-hydrological issues and integrated water resources management. Finally, some challenges related with water resources policy in Chile are commented as well.
