In March 2001, twenty members of the informatics community gathered in Madrid, Spain, to discuss the state of our field as an academic discipline and the challenges that university-based workers in health informatics face.The workshop, held under the auspices of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA),was motivated by troubling observations that members of our community have made in recent years.
