Abstract

ABSTRACT History is often unpopular among engineers, because our careers are dedicated to change and the future. Charles Kettering's famous quote, **Yes, but tomorrow's another day, and his interest in finding a name for a field of study which dealt with the future, and was the opposite of history, probably reflect the interests of most of us. Yet, we can learn from recognizing our historical strengths and limitations. We have organized this paper beginning with questions about who **agricultural engineers are, and more particularly, who are structures and environment agricultural engineers. Next, technical achievements and their impact on North American agriculture are chronicled, because it is logical that we build upon those strengths. Lastly, **What have we not been? and *'What are we now? are asked because these suggest opportunities in new approaches and new types of problems..
