Abstract

Energy decarbonization is promising to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in our energy structure. Ammonia (NH3), as a carbon-free energy carrier, plays an important role in energy decarbonization. It is necessary to develop efficient catalytic processes of NH3 synthesis and utilization, to diminish CO2 emissions and utilize renewable energies. In this Perspective, we evaluate advantages and drawbacks of NH3 synthesis via thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, and NH3 utilization by catalytic decomposition, fuel cells and combustion. We expect that it can accelerate the development of artificial nitrogen cycle for energy decarbonization.
