Abstract

“For every challenge encountered, there is opportunity for growth."—Unknown By the end of 2018, we will celebrate 35 years of excellence since the beginning of the Journal of Vascular Surgery publications. During the past four decades, our Journal has continuously expanded in both content and format, as our specialty has embraced the endovascular revolution to improve treatment of both arterial and venous disease. To respond to the needs of our readers and authors, we have transformed access to and distribution of the journals, and today the Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS) is part of a suite of publications that includes the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders (JVS-VL), and the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Cases and Innovative Techniques (JVS-CIT). JVS journals have become the premier international journals devoted to vascular diseases. To fill an additional need of our specialty, we are in the process of launching a fourth journal, JVS-Vascular Science, since basic and translational research in vascular disease needs a focused outlet. We receive submissions from over 50 countries, with 55% of the submitted manuscripts coming from outside the United States, with China, Japan, Italy, and The Netherlands leading the list. To the authors, reviewers, and readers from North America and around the world, all of whom contribute to the success of the Journal of Vascular Surgery Publications, we express our most sincere gratitude. The world of scholarly medical publishing has been rapidly evolving and the Internet revolution has challenged our journals, through new social media and the ever-decreasing demand for print journals. Testimony to these trends is the growing number of subscribers to JVS Journals, in spite of the decreasing demand for print journals in university libraries worldwide. The Journal of Vascular Surgery publications have kept abreast of these major changes through innovations in digital technology and electronic publications. While we maintain a print circulation of over 4400, JVS articles are also present online at our branded site, www.jvascsurg.org, on Clinical Key, Science Direct, and a combined Journal Branded app from the Google Play and Apple stores. Social media continues to dominate electronic communications; according to a recent survey,1Smith A. Anderson M. Social media use in 2018. Pew Research Center [Internet].http://www.pewinternet.org/2018/03/01/social-media-use-in-2018/Date accessed: October 9, 2018Google Scholar in 2018, 73% of U.S. adults used YouTube and 68% used Facebook, with about three-quarters of these on a daily basis, and 25% use LinkedIn and 24% use Twitter. In response to the social media impact, JVS Publications has developed an increasing presence on all these platforms, disseminating JVS-related news, article highlights, and easy access to full-article downloads. Each issue of JVS is accompanied by the Editor's video summary of selected articles that are available on YouTube. Thanks to efforts by our Social Media Editor, Paul DiMuzio, Creative Editor Daniel Han, and Senior Managing Editor Jessica McEwan, we have grown our presence on Facebook and Twitter.2Journal of Vascular Surgery [TheJVascSurg]Timeline [Facebook Page].https://www.facebook.com/TheJVascSurgDate accessed: October 9, 2018Google Scholar, 3Journal of Vascular Surgery [JVascSurg]Tweets [Twitter Account].https://twitter.com/jvascsurg?lang=enDate accessed: October 9, 2018Google Scholar We now also have over 13,000 followers on LinkedIn4Journal of Vascular SurgeryLinkedIn Page [LinkedIn Account].https://www.linkedin.com/in/journal-of-vascular-surgery-221211132/Date accessed: October 9, 2018Google Scholar and in 2018, we launched Visual Abstracts, easily accessed infographics to deliver key messages of scientific research that can promptly be distributed on social media.5Gloviczki P. The growth in dissemination of JVS content through these digital publications in recent years has been remarkable: in 2017, full-text downloads of JVS articles at the three major websites totaled 3,210,104 and in 2018, the number of online monthly visits to jvascsurg.org exceeded 55,000. At the end of another successful year, we are pleased to report that the state of the Journal of Vascular Surgery publications remains strong. We are thankful to our readers, authors, reviewers, editors, staff, and publisher for their many contributions. We are also blessed by having the support of our sponsoring societies, led by the Society for Vascular Surgery. The JVS Publications would not be successful without each and every regional, national, and international society that submits their best work to the JVS Publications. We wish peace and joy to you and your family this holiday season and may all your dreams for the coming year be fulfilled! Have a happy New Year of 2019! Scholarly peer review plays a key role in scientific publishing. It validates research and upholds the quality and validity of each article and the journal that publishes them. During 2018, 439 reviewers helped the Editors of the JVS journals to make important decisions on the fate of more than 1400 manuscripts. We appreciate the expert contribution of our peer reviewers who unselfishly provide their talent, time, and effort to our journals. We would like to acknowledge our outstanding and hardworking Associate and Assistant Editors, who helped us in 2018 to raise the quality of articles published in JVS. Drs Thomas L. Forbes and Fred A. Weaver served as Clinical Studies Editors and made important decisions on hundreds of submitted manuscripts. We are grateful for the dedication and expert contributions of our new Associate Editor for Basic Science, Dr Alan Dardik. We also thank Dr Keith Calligaro for helping to transform the Abstracts section into Vascular Vantage Point: Review and Commentary of Key non-JVS Publications, complete with personal reflections of an expert, with an improved design and titled commentaries. We thank Dr Michael C. Dalsing, who excelled in 2018 as Assistant Editor of Reviews. Dr Paul J. DiMuzio, Editor for Social Media and Press Releases, with the help of newly elected assistant editor Dr Daniel Han, increased our online readership through active participation in LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter and with the introduction of new features and programs like press releases, JVS journal club. We also express our gratitude to our new Assistant Editor Dr Daniel Han for facilitating the launch of JVS Visual Abstracts. We appreciate the important contributions made by the Editorial Board in 2018. In addition to review and re-review of a large number of original articles, our editorial board members frequently contributed to JVS with commentaries and editorials. Members of the Editorial Board perform an average of 20 reviews each year and during 2018, this accounted for 27% of all the reviews performed. The Editors would like to recognize the significant contributions of the following Editorial Board members who, after many years of valuable service, will be retiring from the Board this month. Almost all of them served two full terms of 3 years on the Board. We also would like to welcome all new members of the Editorial Board of JVS and JVS-CIT, who will start their assignments in January of 2018. Christopher J. Abularrage Zachary M. Arthurs Adam W.
