Abstract

Clinical nurse specialists (CNS) are an advanced practice nursing role. CNSs have expert knowledge, complex decision-making abilities, and enhanced skills for expanded practice in a specialty area. This book describes the CNS role and practice as it exists in 15 selected countries and identifies how CNS practice is shaped by the context in which practice takes place. The CNS role is well-established in some countries and is in varying stages of development in other countries. Regardless of the level of establishment, evidence demonstrates that CNSs are making an impact on the health and well-being of people. The chapters explore the common characteristics of CNS practice, education, and regulation. Areas of commonality include role definition, practice competencies, and expectations for improved clinical and fiscal outcomes. Greater variations reflect the educational and regulatory structure of a country. Our contributing authors, writing from the perspective of their country, have identified opportunities and challenges for the continuing growth and success of the CNS role. This closing chapter summarizes and reflects on the information from the chapter contributors representing geographic areas from North America, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Oceania.
