Abstract

American trypanosomiasis and its etiologic agent Trypanosoma cruzi were first described by Carlos Chagas in 1909.12 Chagas single-handedly characterized this new disease in all of its aspects by first discovering the causative agent and its vector and then seeking out and describing human cases of infection.3
