Abstract

With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a virtual based ‘CGI Fashion Model’ has emerged, which has changed the fashion industry as a whole. For this reason, contemporary society has been placed in a position where virtual reality cannot be distinguished from reality and where the boundary between reality and fantasy is unclear. These phenomena are closely related to Baudrillard’s theory of simulation. With this in mind, the purpose of the following study is to analyze the simulation phenomena in CGI fashion models. For this purpose, the study conducts both literature and case analysis research. The analysis is conducted through literature reviews of academic articles and press releases as well as by examining photographs and videos on social media and YouTube. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, the simulation phenomena in CGI fashion models can be interpreted according to the phase of hybridity, flow, and transfer. However, these phenomena are not mutually exclusive and have been shown to be organically linked to one another based on the concept of representativeness. Second, it is clear that the CGI fashion model is a medium that can provide a technological foundation for the future of the fashion industry with regards to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Third, consumers should keep in mind that CGI fashion models are images created by technology and, therefore, should not trust or accept them blindly. In conclusion, the CGI fashion model is an important measure of new social and cultural phenomena in the fashion industry. At the same time, even though the CGI fashion model is a valuable marketing tool that is suitable for the digital generation, it requires critical awareness instead of unconditional acceptance.
