Abstract
ABSTRACT The study aims to correlate the variation of blood pressure (BP) proximal to the stenosed portion in a stenosed Common Carotid Artery (CCA) with the degree of stenosis. A 3D model of a bifurcated Carotid artery section including the CCA, Internal carotid artery (ICA) and External Carotid Artery (ECA) has been employed for a time-dependent analysis of the blood flow patterns. A physiological pulsatile velocity profile for blood has been assumed, with blood being modelled as a non-Newtonian fluid displaying the Carreau–Yasuda rheological behaviour. The effect of antihypertensive medications of the beta-blocker class, on the upstream BP, has been analysed through the simulation model, in an attempt to assess the efficacy of these medications in atherosclerotic patients. The findings indicate a reduced efficacy of beta-blockers in case of severe stenosis (≥ 75%); with the efficacy decreasing with the enhancement of stenosis extent above 75%.
