Abstract

Work is underway at the US Army Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL) to develop a design for a large scale facility to simulate nuclear blast and thermal loading. The facility, termed the US Large Blast/Thermal Simulator (LB/TS), will be used to test full scale military equipment. The blast portion of the simulation will be produced by a compressed gas driven shock tube with a complex geometry. This paper deals with two advanced concepts in blast simulation currently being investigated for possible uses in the LB/TS design. The first is the use of heated driver gas to allow testing in the flow behind the contact surface. The second concept discussed is the use of fast acting valves to control the flow out of the driver and into the expansion tunnel.
