Abstract

As damage to facilities and human life due to building winds increases, concerns about securing pedestrian safety due to acceleration of wind speed around buildings are also growing. The wind environment changes not only through the overcrowding of cities and high-rise buildings, but also due to the reconstruction of old buildings. In order to reduce the potential hazard imposed by changes in the building complex, the wind environment should be assessed from the building design stage, for which both wind tunnel tests and CFD can be utilized. The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in the pedestrian wind environment in the surrounding area that may occur as the existing low-rise residential complex is reconstructed into a middle- and high-rise apartment complex. To this end, the wind speed and directional characteristics of the target area were analyzed, and the pedestrian wind environments generated by the existing and reconstructed complexes was computed using CFD. Using computed results, the spatial distributions of the probability of occurrence of wind speed exceeding a certain threshold are compared to show the impact of reconstruction of the building complex.
