Abstract

Anticipated pain with intrauterine device (IUD) insertion may be a barrier to more widespread use of this highly effective method of contraception. Previous research evaluating nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, paracervical block with local anesthetic, and cervical ripening agents has been disappointing. Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of 2% lidocaine gel for pain relief with IUD insertion.
