Abstract

The findings have been presented of cervicovaginal smears obtained on 10,246 teen-age patients. A cytologic diagnosis of moderate dysplasia was made on 175 smears; 45 smears demonstrated changes indicative of severe dysplasia; 13 smears were suggestive of squamous cell carcinoma in situ. This represents 23 patients per one thousand cases screened with significant atypia in their smears. The majority of girls with abnormal smears are being prospectively followed without biopsy. In the few cases where conization or biopsy was performed, carcinoma in situ was found in 4 instances and severe dysplasia in 11.
