Abstract

You are the triage nurse in the emergency department. It is a busy night, and you have a waiting room full of patients. A 35-year-old woman arrives; she is walking slowly and reports a motor vehicle crash in which her car was hit from behind. Air bags deployed, and the patient reports a neck pain level of 6 on a 10-point scale. The patient is alert and oriented. She extricated herself from her vehicle and was found sitting on the curb. She declined transport on scene. You know it will be a while before the provider sees the patient. Do you place a cervical collar on her?
