Abstract

Cytologic screening of a general population is a recommmended method for government programs to control cervical cancer. In developing countries with limited budgets it is preferable to define high risk groups of women. The incidence of cervical cancer in Jamaica is 1 of the highest in the world. A pilot study was conducted in a low income community of Kingston Jamaica to evaluate by cytologic methods the prevalence of preclinical carcinoma of the cervix among the women. Despite the low social class and the youth (76% under 40 years of age) of the women 63% of the target group participated in the study. Results indicated a high rate of precancerous lesions. The study results indicate an urgent need for mass cytologic screening in Jamaica and other high risk areas. Screening should be done on women of 20 or even less in high risk areas.
