Abstract

This paper on the use of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) standards on railway passenger ride comfort is from the proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Computer System Design and Operation in Railways and Other Transit Systems, held in Beijing, China, in 2010. Working Group CEN/TC256/WG7, focuses on ride comfort for passengers. The authors report on the revisions that the working group has made to the previous European standard from 1999 for the measurement and evaluation of ride comfort for rail passengers. This paper discusses certain parts of EN 12299:2009, “ Railway Applications: Ride Comfort for Passengers,” with a focus on data processing, the application of computer methods and interpretation of results. The authors contend that even in the new version there are still some missing links to an overall comfort evaluation that could be used to optimize ride comfort against travel time or other factors.
